Tip: Save You Wallet on High Flying Gas Price

It's hard to see the gas price tag make the record high, again, without doing anything to help. Last time, I introduced a way to save you 3% at any gas station with a Chase Perfect Card. This time, I found a even better deal to earn 5% back at any gas station. The tip for you is to charge your gas purchases on a Citi Dividend Platinum Select Card. Apply now, get approved, and start using it to get 5% back.

At first I had doubt on the 5% rebate thing Citi claimed, so I tried it out. Last week, my accrued rebate exceeded $100, and they mailed me a check to appreciate having me. The best part of the rebate program is that the 5% back is also applicable to purchases at supermarkets as well as at drugstores. We charged our routine purchases for my household of four using Citi dividend Select Card, and the accrued amount is about 5% of our $1000 gas plus supermarket spending month to month. Within a couple months, I received $100 back by mail. Simple as that.

The card do not requires an annual fee as long as you use it a couple times a year. When you have it, you want to use it as many times as possible to take the advantage of its rebating program. However, the generic rule of thumb must apply - always pay off your monthly balance when you can, and be persist. That way, you'll enjoy the feeling of paying 95% the price other people are paying on gas and at supermarkets. Apply now, get approved, and start using it to get 5% back.

Tip: Cell Phone Purchase

Choose your cell phone merchant wisely. I'd like to share you a tip from FONcentral.com on their side of story about why FONcentral beats Amazon regarding wireless purchases. As they pointed out to me, there are three very important differences when price comparing among cell phone merchants. Here the case of FONcentral vs. Amazon:

1) UPFRONT COST - Many phones that FONcentral carries require no upfront out-of-pocket cost. Most, if not all, of Amazon's phones require the customer to pay an upfront cost. This is very important in the mind of the consumer. If you can receive the phone for free now as opposed to recouping the cost after the rebates are received 6-8 weeks later, invariably you will almost always choose the first option.

2) FREE 2-DAY SHIPPING - All of FONcentral's phones are shipped free anywhere in the USA via 2-Day Shipping, always. Amazon 2-day shipping varies but is usually around $12.00 per item and Amazon's free shipping (when they offer it) can take up to 5 days to receive the item.

3) FREE ACCESSORIES - FONcentral always offers free accessories with every purchase. This may include free in-car charger, leather carrying case, hands free earpiece, USB cables, etc. This is not offered by Amazon.

Another important difference is FONcentral maintains its own fulfillment warehouse and call center. Thus, it processes, activates, programs and packages all orders. And, unlike Amazon, provide customer care on all purchases. Customers at any time may contact FONcentral at 800-973-0691 or by email for an immediate response. Amazon only offers email but no phone support for your order.

Online Shipping Fee

I've seen the Big-O advertising all over the places these days. Starting today, Overstock.com is experimenting with $1 shipping. The idea is because Overstock says it generated more sales during the $1 shipping promotions than any other time. An added benefit to this is that $1 shipping can be combined with any coupon or deal/discount found on myJaco.com. This is a necessary step for Overstock to counter Amazon Premium program from Amazon. Amazon Premium cost $79 a year for buyers to get unlimited 2-day express shipping on over a million in-stock items, or extra $3.99 per item for overnight. Once you pay the $79 annual fee, there will be no minimum purchase required for the express shipping delivered to you. You can sure save some shipping fee if you're an Amazon frequent buyer that you buy at least once a month or more, or you can share such program with up to 4 family members. Other merchants offer free shipping rarely, or require minimum purchase in most cases. For a list of merchant currently offering free shipping, go to myJaco.com and do a coupon search with the following term:

free shipping

Tip: In-Store Coupons

Questions came once in a while from readers asking whether online coupon codes can be printed and brought to a store for redemption. The short answer is NO, for the majority of stores do not accept arbitrary format of discount code printed from your store. Imagine what if every one come up with their dreamed discount and print out their own coupon and ask the cashers in store to honor it. It will be chaos. Instead, online coupon codes can only be redeemed at a .com store in most cases. During the checkout process, most likely there will be a text box where the special coupon code can be typed in, and you will get the discount if all the requirement is met. That is basically how an online offer works.

Some merchants are putting efforts to build a distribution network of printable coupons, so coupons can be searched upon, printed out, and redeemed at a local store. For example, book store Borders often offer HTML link to printable coupon pags where coupon can be printed out and redeemed at a Border local store (check availability here). Other creative approach was tested by Gap last week to email the printable coupons to consumers. We at myJaco actually provided a special service on request to participate in such promotion for Gap. However, not many stores have followed this endeavor, probably because very few has national presence as Borders or Gap.

Nevertheless, consumers do want to access coupons, in a way that is easy to access and procure, something that is widely accepted. For this, Entertainment Book is more than just the in-store coupon book, it's "The Ultimate Savings Membership" as the company behind it says. Depend on where you live, you have the potential to save up to 50% on local entertainment, dining, lodging, and more with the Entertainment Book from Entertainment.com! It is a coupon book and it works just like you expect it should. At their web site, you purchase a copy of the Entertainment Book for your hometown or a city you visit regularly, and you'll receive literally hundreds of coupons to area businesses that will save you money on just about everything you do and need, from donuts to show tickets to hotel rooms and more!

Starting 3/1, Entertainment Book is offering 50% off ($12.50 off $25 listed) retail for the first time this year when you purchase an entertainment book online.

Tip: The Incredibles

Google has rolled out a great movie search this week at google.com for you to locate showtime. It's incredibly fast and user friendly. I gave it a try with 'The Incredibles' in mind and wonder what kind of reviews are with it. All it takes for the answers is going to Google, in the search box I typed,

movie: the incredibles

Boom! I got a link to 64 reviews and 2 locations showing The Incredibles near my office in zip code 95112. Links to the theater locations are also available that take me to Google's new map service. Google map is extremely easy to use. It's fast, and it's easy to shift your view too.

Pretty cool. How about other movies showing near me? No problem, just ask Google,

movie: 95112

As a result, dozens of showtime near me were returned on screen. If you want to locate the best deal for The Incredibles DVD pre-order (available on 3/15), come to myJaco.com and search for,

New iPod only at Apple.com

Apple has announced new iPod Minis now starting at $199 for the new 4GB model, $249 for the new 6GB model. Both models feature up to 18 hours of battery life (longer than previous models). The previous old 4BG model is now $179 at Amazon. The new iPod mini comes 4 different colors - in bright and vibrant new pink, green, and blue. In addition, 2 new iPod Photo models were just introduced to the market: 30GB at $349 and 60GB. These new models are only available at the Apple.com store at this time. Free Shipping and Free Personalized Engraving still apply. Wonder what Apple might come up next? Rumor says that Apple might be interested in buying up TiVo. The speculation caused shares of TiVo have shot up 17% or more, but Smith Barney analysts don't believe that Apple is interested.

Tip: Where to Dine and Save?

Unlike grocery shopping, clipping coupon for restaurant is not common, and the selections are very limited. I've seen paper coupons for subways, local pizza stores, or KFC near by my place. With the help of the Internet, you might be able to search and seek for printable restaurant coupons for some chain stores, but my luck is very limited, often frustrated. Online restaurant coupons is not practical yet as of early 2005.

Alternatively, some credit cards give you up to 5% rebate on dining at many restaurants where the cards are accepted. That works. Using another approach, folks at Restaurant.com offer a great way of locating restaurant near you to save. The saving is relative, compared to others dine at the same restaurant you pick. The way it works is that you buy dining certificates through the web at a discount price, often time at 50% or more below the face price. For example, a $25 dining certificate of your choice may only priced at $10 with some condition attached to it, like minimum purchase requirement of $35 order. The discount varies from one restaurant to another, the minimum purchase requirement when redeem at the restaurant also varies. But in general, you save if you pay for the dining certificate online with your credit card first, then take the certificate with you to pay for the meals in store. Immediately after you place your certificate order online, the instructions for you to print out the certificate will be emailed to you right away.

If you like to try out new places to eat-out with your family, the zip code search interface is very helpful to show you what are available participating stores near you. Just punch in your zip code, the next page will list all the restaurants and distances for your choice. Search before you buy dining certificates always at a discount pricing! Easy.

I tried at Restaurant.com and typed in the zip code of 95112, 39 choices within 15 miles proximity were presented to me with store names, description, distance, etc.

Once in a while, Restaurant.com offers extra deep savings on top of already discount dining certificate, sometimes up to 50% off. For example, a $25 dining certificate often priced at $10 on the site. If you have a 50% online coupon code to apply toward the certificate order, that will bring down the final price for you to only $5. That's right, pay only $5 for a dining certificate of $25 value! To check whether such great deal is available, click here.

Tip: Stackable Coupons

What are "stackable" online coupons? An online coupon is said to be stackable when it can be applied on top of other promotion code or sales, to get extra saving on top of reduced priced as a result of other promotion. It is very unlikely that merchants will allow coupon to be stackable. Usually, the terms of applying a coupon code is limited to not combinable with other offers. However, once in a while, some merchant will run a stackable coupon for special promotion, but very rare.

It would be great if some merchants do offer coupon codes that are stackable. Even one stackable code will make us (consumers) feel special and trigger our impulse to make the purchase. At least it works for me. Needless to say if there is a way to have the extra stackable savings to be applicable across multiple merchants. The question is, how? Today, here comes a perfect way that I'd like to give you an example of how to achieve this, but you need to act before 2/14.

Though this saving won't give you extra savings on Amazon items, but it will be applicable toward items available on participating stores like Goldwater Creek, Linens-N-Things, Bare necessity, nucleation, Diamond.com, Ashford.com, The Sharper Image, Oshmans, Sports Authority, Modells, Fogdog.com, eHobbies.com, Games Universe, Nick.com, Restaurant.com, and more. The approach is to buy a GiveAnything certificate before 2/14 by applying the 10% code available at myJaco.com. After you've done so, you'll lock in the 10% off for the above mentioned stores. Then you can take your time thumb through up-to-date deals from GiveAnything participating stores only available at myJaco.com. When ever you spot the offer you feel like, purchase though the link and paid by your 10% discounted certificate to virtually stack the 10% off on top of direct offers from participating merchants.
